After nine years in the FIA World Endurance Championship and two world titles, Kévin Estre will dedicate himself full-time to the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship in 2026. It’s a significant change of direction for the Frenchman who, however, will continue his endurance racing adventure in a technical and human environment he knows well and really appreciates: the #6 Porsche 963, the Porsche Penske Motorsport team, and his teammate of the last three seasons, Laurens Vanthoor. An exciting challenge lies ahead, with the goal of adding the most famous American endurance races and a first title across the Atlantic to his laurels!

So ten years after being named a works driver, Kevin remains loyal to Porsche. The Stuttgart-based manufacturer announced its withdrawal from the FIA WEC a few weeks ago, but it will continue its involvement in the North American IMSA championship, of which it is the two-time defending champion.

“I’m both a little disappointed not to be continuing in the FIA WEC after all these years and very excited about competing in my first full IMSA season in the top category,” says the former French, European, and World champion. “It’s an interesting new challenge, with races of a different format on old-school circuits that suit me well and generate a lot of adrenaline!”

Kevin is very familiar with the unique atmosphere of IMSA. He made it onto the podium in his 10th outing in the Rolex 24 at Daytona and his 6th start in the Twelve Hours of Sebring last year. “I competed in almost the entire championship in 2014, in a Porsche GT, before moving on to another American series in 2015.” The upcoming season will nonetheless bring a significant amount of new experiences. “I’ll be returning to circuits I haven’t raced on for over ten years, with a much more powerful car. Watkins Glen and Detroit will be completely new to me!”

The Lyon native will team up again with Belgian Laurens Vanthoor, with whom he secured the 2024 FIA WEC world title. Australian Matt Campbell, the reigning IMSA GTP champion, will provide support for the longer events.

Kevin finished on the podium in all three 24-hour races he entered in 2025, Daytona, Le Mans, and the Nürburgring, never far from the top step. “Our victory in Austin and our third place at Mount Fuji allowed us to stay in contention for the Hypercar World Championship title until the very end, but overall, the season was a frustrating one. I still really want to win Le Mans, of course, but I’m approaching this exciting IMSA GTP programme with maximum passion and motivation.” A few appearances in GT racing, with the updated version of the Porsche 911 GT3 R, are also a possibility.

IMSA has often smiled upon French drivers and Kevin loves IMSA. Bring on 2026!

It’s done and dusted! Kevin Estre and his teammates from Porsche Penske Motorsport are FIA Endurance Hypercar World Champions! They arrived in Bahrain with a big lead and it was even bigger after the finish, but the 8 hours of racing were not short of incidents, twists and upsets, stress and cold sweats! The driver born in Lyon, who celebrated his 36th birthday at the beginning of this crucial week, is now a double GT and Hypercar World Champion. So we can’t help but think about his next goal – outright
victory in the 24 Hours of Le Mans!

The culmination

A world title is an achievement for any driver. With 9 manufacturers entering between 18 and 23 cars in the premier class, the season lived up to its promise and the champions did not become so by chance. From their 6th place in 2023 to the 2024 crown, they were able to up their performance and improve every aspect of their game. “We worked a lot collectively,” says Kévin. “There were some changes within the team and we have to take into account the benefit of the experience of a year with the 963. We arrived in Qatar with a car that was much better than the previous year and we continued to progress throughout the season.
The two engineers assigned to our no. 6 crew were really fantastic!”

One for all, all for the title!

Already team-mates in 2023, Kévin Estre, Laurens Vanthoor and André Lotterer set off together for a second campaign at the wheel of the no. 6 Porsche 963. “We’re a very close-knit crew,” continues Kévin, “Between us, it gelled right from the start and we’ve forged a great bond. We all think about endurance in the same way. None of the three wanted to stand out because, above all, we complement one another. Each has their strengths and weaknesses and the important thing is to know them well.”

The 8 Hours of Bahrain provided an illustration of this: “We changed the order of the stints, taking into account what one or the other could bring depending on whether it was necessary to warm up and maintain the hard tyres at high temperatures or, on the contrary, to nurse the mediums while it was still hot,” explains Kevin. “That was our strength all year; we found solutions as a threesome, remaining united to get the best out of each person’s potential according to the circumstances of the moment. We never got lost in the choice of set-ups, tyres or strategy. We were always open-minded, and we never had to tiptoe on eggshells to spare anybody’s blushes!” That’s also what Endurance is all about: The human factor is a key ingredient in success.

Leading from start to finish

This year, the Frenchman, the Belgian and the German won the Qatar 1812 KM straight off and retained the lead of the World Championship until the final finishing line. And yet… “We weren’t the fastest, but we managed to score more points than our rivals. Overall, we had a better season. We won in Qatar and at Mount Fuji, the two races where we were clearly ahead. But when we were worth a Top 5 in terms of performance, we still managed to get on the podium. We always maximised the result while the
others sometimes made mistakes.”

But we must mention the exception of Bahrain. “At the beginning, the no. 50 Ferrari that was fighting with us for the championship banged into us twice, making us lose 12 places. We were 18th and last of the Hypercars at turn no. 4! We fought our way back little by little although the first hours were a bit laborious. The car was not ideal in the high temperatures and the no. 7 Toyota, which was also threatening us, was in the lead, so it didn’t look great for us. Then the temperature dropped when night closed in and we found ourselves in a position that gave us a glimpse of the title. The last two hours were a bit crazy: there were lots of safety cars and Laurens found himself fighting for a podium. But we made a small strategic error on a VSC (Virtual Safety Car, Editor’s note) and Laurens who had not received the slightest penalty all year made small errors, the kind that only happen in a race like this, when you don’t drive “naturally” and you think too much because of the stress linked to what’s at stake! At the same time, our rivals had problems or made even more penalising errors.”

And at the end of the road? “We”re world champions. It’s my greatest title, acquired against crazy competition. Next year, it will certainly be even tougher but to date, I think it was the best year of competition in the premier category in endurance, at least since the rebirth of the FIA WEC in 2012. I don’t know if there have ever been so many manufacturers involved with professional drivers. Since I started in endurance, my goal was to become a works Porsche driver, to fight for outright victory in the 24 Hours of Le Mans and to be world champion.”

Therefore, the pole setter of the last edition of the Sarthe classic still has a fantastic box to tick. “I’m proud of my career and what we’ve accomplished as a team. On a personal level, I had one of my best years. I would like to thank everyone who’s helped me since the beginning of my career, my close family, who has put a lot of effort since I was 4 years old and all the sponsors who’ve helped me and enabled me to become a professional.”

In 2025, Kévin will defend his FIA WEC title with Laurens Vanthoor, as a duo in some races and with the support of Australian Matt Campbell in others including the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Still with the Porsche 963, the Frenchman will be at the start of the three main endurance races on the IMSA calendar at Daytona, Sebring and Road Atlanta (Petit Le Mans). A GT program including the 24 Hours of the Nürburgring will also be on his busy schedule. But in the meantime, the Frenchman has a date with the prestigious awards ceremony of the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile to officially receive his title!

2023 will remain a milestone year for Kevin Estre in the FIA WEC. While continuing as a works Porsche driver, the Frenchman swapped from the Grand Touring GTE Pro 911 RSR (991) to the 963 complying with the Hypercar regulations, the top-tier endurance category in the world championship. Although there were several obstacles to overcome the hard graft put in by the man from Lyon, his teammates and his Porsche Penske team made it possible to clinch two podiums on the way to 6th place in the World Championship rankings. Watch out for them in 2024! Kevin was also able to satisfy his passion for discovery by racing in the Repco Supercars Championship, the flagship discipline of Australian motorsport!

On an upward curve in the FIA WEC

The Hypercar category, which brought major manufacturers back to Endurance, attracted large crowds to the FIA WEC circuits. The Centenary of the 24 Hours of Le Mans that attracted a full capacity crowd was emblematic in this respect. The ingenuity of the Hypercar regulations is that they offer manufacturers the choice between two definitions: LMh (car created from a blank sheet of paper) and LMDh (LMP2 approved original chassis).

Kevin has remained loyal to the FIA WEC since 2016 when he became a works Porsche driver. His results in the LMGTE Pro category include a World Champion title and a victory at Le Mans. So what’s worth recalling from this season spent fighting for the general classification at the wheel of the #6 Porsche 963 he shared with Laurens Vanthoor and André Lotterer? “Overall, two brands, which entered LMhs were a cut above their rivals. By the end of the championship, I think we had the most competitive LMDh, which was not the case at the beginning. We made a step forward and we started to pose a serious threat to the Ferraris. We even beat them fair and square in the 6 Hours of Fuji where we fought for victory with the Toyotas!”

During this penultimate round of the championship, #6 led for 4 hours and Kévin kept the leading Toyota behind him for an hour and a half! He continues: “This is proof that we progressed in the closing stages of the championship. For us, Le Mans came a bit too early and the 24 Hours remain the disappointment of the year. It was the 963’s first season so we had to get to grips with the car, but today we are on the pace!”

Still up to scratch in GT3

Like every year, Kevin joined different private teams fielding Porsche 911 GT3 Rs in major grand touring events. While the 24 Hours of Daytona and the Nürburgring have left only a fleeting memory, Kevin clinched fourth spot in the 24 Hours of Spa at the wheel of the highest-placed Porsche entered by Manthey EMA, which he shared with Laurens Vanthoor and Julien Andlauer. The Petit Le Mans was another source of satisfaction with the runner-up position in GTD for Pfaff Motorsports just a hairsbreadth away from victory! At Macau Kevin’s overtaking move on Earl Bamber, one of the few during this year’s FIA GT World Cup, will remain engraved in people’s memory.

Discovery: from the Hypercar to the Supercar!

Kevin’s “bonus” of the season was a pair of trips to Australia to compete in two rounds of the Repco Supercars Championship. “An old dream as I’ve been interested in this championship for a long time. Through a combination of circumstances I found myself at Penrite Racing where I know the managers Steve and Benton Grove well because they race as amateurs with a Porsche. They needed a driver to back up Matt Payne in two enduro races, the Sandown 500 and the famous Bathurst 1000, otherwise known as “The Great Race”. As a Porsche driver, you enjoy a good reputation there, you feel very welcome and the respect is mutual. The championship is very tough; the drivers are excellent and the teams are of high quality. It’s a small world, a little apart – it reminds me of the Super GT in Japan – very different to what’s done in Europe. Ford and Chevrolet vie for national supremacy. We finished P6 at Sandown, ahead of the other Mustangs, and P11 at Bathurst.”

High quality results for a novice in a discipline where everything seems to work backwards. “With these cars, you have to brake with your right foot and I also had to get used again to declutching and heel and toe downshifting. This hadn’t happened to me since the days of the Porsche 997 Cup! The gearbox is sequential, but with a lever located on the left because you are seated on the right. And there’s significantly less aero compared to the cars I usually drive. It was a great experience and probably my biggest challenge in a long time.” In addition, Sandown and Bathurst run counterclockwise unlike the vast majority of European circuits.

In 2024, Kevin will return to the FIA WEC in a Porsche 963 run by the Porsche Penske works team within an unchanged line-up. “The team will be more experienced, and it now knows the car and the tyres better, but there will also be more competition.” The season will begin in IMSA with the Rolex 24 At Daytona in GTP (equivalent to Hypercar in FIA WEC: Editor’s note) with Nick Tandy, Laurens Vanthoor and Mathieu Jaminet. Depending on the opportunities, we should also see Kevin again in GT at the start of some of the great classics on the calendar!

Kevin was a redoubtable kart racer and won the Formula Campus title in his very first season in motor racing. A little later on he oriented his career towards the Porsche Carrera Cup winning two overall titles and a total of 35 outright victories in the French Cup, the German Cup and the Supercup. He then became a McLaren GT works driver, but Porsche very soon asked him to rejoin its ranks and in 2015 at the age of 26 he became one of the Stuttgart manufacturer’s team’s works drivers. He accumulated experience and success at the wheel of 911 RSR ‘17s and RSR-19s in the World Endurance Championship between 2016 and 2022. The highlights? His victory in GTE Pro in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in June 2018 and the FIA GT Drivers’ world champion title in the 2018-2019 super season. Although this programme was his priority, Kevin added to his laurels two classics that he had a burning desire to win: the 24 Hours of Spa and the ADAC 24h at the Nürburgring Nordschleife at the wheel of the Porsche 911 GT3 R.

After such a career, the LMDh programme that Porsche is preparing to launch in partnership with Team Penske, which will look after the operational side, comes at just the right moment for Kevin, who frequently dropped hints that he was ready for such a challenge.

The Frenchman spoke to us about the immense satisfaction he felt when his name was announced. “When Porsche decided to launch itself into the FIA WEC and IMSA with this car, I didn’t really have to apply as they knew I was interested. After that, some time elapsed before I heard anything more about it. At the end of 2021, I was integrated into the development programme. I did six days running on the Porsche test track in Weissach near Stuttgart, as well as tests in Barcelona and at Motorland Aragon. For me it was an aim I had set myself ever since I opted for endurance: win outright after having won in GT! Now, I’m at the very summit of endurance; it’s really fantastic!”

The new Porsche racer in compliance with the LMDh regulations has an LMP2-type chassis.
For Kevin, this concentrate of technology represents a raft of novelties. “The hybrid system imposes a level of battery charge that never falls below a minimum or exceeds a maximum. Its management is automatic, but the manual mode is available if needed. The car requires a different working method to the one I’m familiar with. You have to relearn a lot of things when you swap from GT to such a prototype. Concerning the aerodynamics, I’ve never driven a car with so much downforce. It’s also lighter with a lower centre of gravity.”

The driver announcement for the LMDh programme was made today at the Festival of Speed at Goodwood where several legendary Porsches from the world of endurance were present. The composition of the line-ups and the championships in which each driver will be involved will be unveiled at a later date. “This year at Le Mans I was thinking about it in some of my stints when I saw the Hypercars and LMP2 prototypes passing me on the outside in the Porsche Esses. Next year, I’ll be going round the GTs on the outside in the races I’ll do at the wheel of the Porsche 963!”

And between now and then, the perspective of winning his second GT World Endurance Championship title – which he just missed out on last year – would not displease Kevin or his employer!

Among the achievements that have marked Kevin Estre’s 2021 season, the first one to underline is his score of five out of six possible pole positions at the wheel of the #92 works Porsche 911 RSR GTE Pro in the World Endurance Championship that has just ended in Bahrain. This stunning feat only serves to highlight the Frenchman’s out-and-out speed. Clearly, clinching a second world title in the FIA WEC was his priority objective this year. Unfortunately, his hopes were crushed in the dying minutes of the final race when one of his team-mates was punted into a spin by the Ferrari of their direct rivals. But 2021 also saw Kévin emerging victorious in an event that he had set his heart on winning: the Nürburgring 24 Hours! Today, his endurance record is absolutely exceptional and it is perhaps the start of an even-more fecund period in his career!

Pure speed

The chase for pole position is universally recognised as the art of driving in its noblest form. Over a single lap of the circuit the driver with his sensations on full alert extracts the maximum to his car in the ideal exploitation window of the tyres while respecting track limits. Kevin achieved this feat at Spa, Monza, Portimao and Bahreïn (twice). This year only the Le Mans pole escaped him in the FIA WEC.

“My accident in the Le Mans Superpole is my only error of the season,” acknowledges the man who won the GTE Pro category in the 2018 Sarthe classic. “The car’s chassis had to be changed, but this didn’t have any effect on our final result in the 24 Hours in which we suffered more from neutralisations that penalised us and a slight lack of pace.”

The driver lineup in the #92 Porsche, which included Neel Jani from Switzerland and on an occasional basis Dane Michael Christensen alongside Estre, won at Spa-Francorchamps, Monza and Bahrain. The trio looked set to add the 8 Hours of Bahrain and the Drivers’ and Manufacturers’ titles to their laurels when Christensen was punted into a spin by Pier-Guidi. “It’s certainly the biggest disappointment of the year for the whole Porsche Motorsport team. I think we were stronger than the Ferrari and that we deserved to win. I still don’t understand why their penalty was withdrawn. I have to admit that losing the world championship title in this fashion still sticks in my throat!”

It shows the fantastic charge by the driver in the #911Grello Porsche 911 GT3 R from 11th place on the grid of the Nürburgring 24 Hours up into the lead in barely more than 20 minutes. “I started on the wet greasy track on slicks. The other cars were shod with very different types of tyres as half the circuit was soaking wet. The race was stopped for a long time because of fog, but for me the 2021 event was the most difficult I ever experienced from a mental point of view. We made a simple pact in our team – win or bust! On the restart on Sunday when you know that eight or nine cars can win you know that you’re in for a ding-dong battle! Normally on the Nordschleife, you leave yourself a 1 to 2% margin as you can come across water on the track, oil or a car that’s much slower than you on your trajectory or in the guardrail. But I was going for the win. I was completely pumped up and I went pedal to the metal for the last two hours even though I was physically and mentally exhausted!”

This year the driver from Lyon who lives in Austria has been pretty successful on the Nordschleife. Besides the 24 Hours the new Ringmeister won two events in the Nürburgring Endurance Series. His score is 100% wins in 2021 in the Green Hell!

What’s really positive is the arrival of the Corvettes which will take on Porsche and Ferrari.” Without forgetting the thrilling endurance races in which he will take part in the four corners of the GT3 planet… 2022 will be well worth the detour!

A year quite unlike any other

2020, a year we’ll all remember for a long time, or one we want to forget completely – delete as appropriate! But above all for Carolin and Kévin Estre, it will be the year which saw them become the parents of a baby boy, Tommy, on 8th July. “It was really the most wonderful piece of good news of the year,” smiles the French driver. “Because of the health crisis I spent a lot of time at home in the house with Carolin and Tommy. All three of us are ready to celebrate our first Christmas together!”

This is the time of year when Porsche usually celebrates its champions at a marvelous party. The Night of Champions did take place on Saturday 12th December, but on screen and without guests. The Stuttgart Company used it to unveil its sporting programmes and its various works drivers. Kevin will continue to race in the FIA WEC (World Endurance Championship) in the Porsche 911 RSR, but next year he’ll have a new team-mate.

It will be Swiss driver, Neel Jani, winner of the 2016 24 Hours of Le Mans who also clinched a world title at the wheel of the Porsche 919 Hybrid LMP1 prototype the same year. Although Jani is less familiar with the cockpit of the make’s grand touring cars he finished second in category in the Sebring 12 Hours in November. It was precious experience as the 2021 FIA WEC will kick off on the renowned Florida circuit. “I met Neel when he was racing for Porsche in LMP1,” Kévin remembers. “We met up again when we were having our seat fittings. I live in Austria a kilometre from the Swiss border so we’re almost neighbours as we’re only one-and-a-half-hours apart!”

Reconquering is the name of the game

The main aim of the coming season will be to reconquer the World Endurance Championship GT title. The Estre-Christensen pairing finished third in this year’s championship, which began in September 2019 at Silverstone and was supposed to end at Le Mans in 2020, but the Covid-19 pandemic turned everything upside down. Finally, eight races took place and the Franco-Danish lineup in the no. 92 Porsche scored three pole positions, six podiums and two fastest race laps. They won at Spa and in the last round of the championship on the Bahrain circuit as well and finished second on four occasions. “Unfortunately, in the two races in which a large helping of points was up for grabs we ran into technical problems. It was the case at Le Mans, which was our biggest disappointment of the year. We had a new car that looked very like the previous model, but it had 95% new parts.”

Next year Kévin and Neel can count on a fully sorted out RSR to get back on the world championship-winning trail. “It’ll be more reliable and we’ll continue developing it to obtain more performance, especially at Le Mans.”

Like the majority of Porsche works drivers Kévin will compete in the Nürburgring 24 Hours in GT3 with a customer team. The winner of the Spa 24 Hours in 2019 has never hidden the fact that he dreams of adding victory in the German classic to his laurels. “We’ll have to be able to count on efficient logistics as the race falls at the same time as the Le Mans 24-Hours test day. We’ll have to leave the Nürburgring four or five hours before the end to be able to run in the Sarthe.” And be fighting fit!

Finally, Kévin was delighted to hear that Porsche will be returning to the top endurance category thanks to the LMDh regulations drawn up by the ACO and the Americans from IMSA. “It’s great news for endurance and for motor sport. We’re hoping to see at least four leading manufacturers taking up the challenge and this will generate enormous sporting interest. It’s obvious that I’d love to be part of this adventure!”

But he’ll have to be patient as the category will not be introduced until 2023. In the meantime, the ninth season of the FIA WEC will begin with the 1000 Miles of Sebring on 19th March 2021. A Merry Christmas and a great festive season to one and all!
